More Play Without Color

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

I finally got the photos to come out decent. It took a couple of tries- My hands aren't very steady, and first batch were a bit blurry. This group of little quilts were made using fabric that I printed with Cosmos flowers using black paint. The prints came out quite interesting. I also ended up with a couple surprise prints. I used small pieces of fabric over the flowers as I pressed them onto the fabric I was printing onto. That resulted in much softer prints after being used many times each, since not much paint ended up on the front side of the flowers.

First in the group is "Black and White Flower Study #2". It used a single full flower and a partial Flower. I used black thread to accent the flowers and to add leaves to the composition. Silver metallic thread was used to add accents of decorative machine stitching, and for the quilting in the black and gray areas. This is listed here in my Etsy Shop.

The next one uses a larger section of printed fabric with 2 flower prints and 2 partial flowers. This one also uses the black thread for quilting the accents in the flowers and in the border fabrics. There is no silver thread used in this one. It is listed here in my Etsy Shop.

"Black & White  study #3" is the final one in this group. The white triangle sections were used as cover cloths while pressing the paint covered flowers onto the other white fabric for the prints. Each piece was used a number of times. The black thread was used again here, and I also added silver metallic around the leaves with a second round of stitching. The outer areas including the corners are quilted with the silver metallic thread. A flower was also stitched into the center fabric, the was accented with black paint. I also added silver metallic paint to the flower centers. this one is listed here on my Etsy Shop.

You can also see some detail shots of each of these at my Etsy Art Shop. Working with only black and white and gray fabrics has been more enjoyable than I expected it to be. These pieces are really eye grabbers even without the colors I love to work with so much.

The black oval piece in my first black & white post is starting to take shape. I have cut more of the gray leaves, and am thinking of dressing them up with some pearlescent medium. I will be doing more tomorrow, and post an update in a few days if all goes well.

Journal Quilt Unveiling, and More

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

Now that the International Quilt Market has begun in Houston, TX, I can now unveil my accepted journal quilt that is on display there today through next Sunday at the end of the Quilt Festival. We were not to publish photos until after the show opened. It will be traveling to at least 2 more shows- Chicago in the spring, and Long Beach CA next summer.

This is "Iris on the Rocks", a quilt that I did not intend to even make. It decided for me. The theme for the exhibition is The Elements- Earth, Water, Air, Fire- My usual flowers, pinks and blues don't scream elements. The rocky center panel uses one of my rocks and mud fabrics from this summer's experimentation. I stitched tucks for texture into the rock fabric, then couched various yarns on for even more texture. The yarns make me think of the lichens, mosses, and small plants that struggle to grow in the harsh rocky environment. Assorted glass beads, tiny gemstone chips, metallic lady bug and butterflies add more interest to the rocky scene. The green sections are from a fabric painted at my second workshop this summer, and the rocky texture is what I played with during my first one. The composition seemed to just fall into place, and ended up being nearly the right size for the exhibit, so I entered it, and it was accepted.

Here is a detail, showing part of the rocky section, showing some of the beading and stitching detail.

The area cut out of the piece where the Iris photo was placed, is what I used to begin making my newest small piece. I had another copy of the photo I used in this quilt that is a little smaller, so I used it in the small piece, too.

This is the little piece that came from the leftovers from the journal quilt. I added similar beads, stone chips, and creatures tucked in and around the fibers, like the original. Some of the yarns were hand stitched on this one, while all on the journal are machine couched. This little quilt is 6.5"x8.5" in size. I used two different yarns to bind the edges of this for a different effect. The upper left corner section of black is quilted with my usual vine pattern, and there are beads added there, too. This little quilt is now SOLD.

Here are a couple more little mini quilts that I have used my Iris flowers printed onto the silk in. The photos are surrounded by crazy patch of assorted fabrics. Black yarn with gold metallic is used to cover the edges of the photos and to bind the quilts, and they are free motion quilted using my vine pattern.

They are each 5"x7" in size. They would look great displayed, mounted on artist canvas, so that the edges and texture of them show nicely.

These are both available for purchase at $25 each. They are packaged in archival crystal clear bags with acid free backing boards to protect them. I ship by USPS first class mail.

Black and White

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

I have been playing with black, white and gray fabrics lately, and have not even taken time to show what I have done here… The fibro has not been playing nice, so my brain has been foggy, and I have spent many months just getting through one day at a time. Finally feeling a bit better, I decided to show what I have done without color, and NO, your monitor has not gone wonky– I really have been working without color!!

Here is one of my mock-ups for my "Forest Ferns" that will be in the "My World in  Black and White" exhibition that will be travelling next year.

I don't usually work with blacks and grays, so I had to paint up some, and even buy some. I did the sunprints of  the ferns this summer, with black Dye-Na-Flow paint from Jacquard. I really like how they turned out- the ferns are definitely the focus in this fabric. When I use my colors, the color combinations and patterns also grab attention.

The first photo is one of the first tries- I had some laces that I wanted to use- here a white one on the sides, but when I had it critiqued, the comments  were to keep the ferns as the focus and the lace distracted. I also played with something else here- I took photos of the sunprints and turned them negative in my photo program, the printed them onto cotton. The corners show a couple of these.

The second Photo shows the final mock-up that I decided on, just before construction. This piece was fully designed on the wall before construction began- a change from my usual way of starting and adding.

I decided against the corner negative ferns, went in the back yard, and found some nice small Maple leaves. I used these for leaf prints. I used black paint on the gray fabric, and a silver metallic mixed with pearlescent on the black fabric. The outer border fabric has a design of leaves that resemble Oaks to me.

This is the finished quilt- 28.5 X 36" in size- Big for what I usually do.

While doing the quilting on this, I had to make thread decisions, and I am always afraid of ruining a good piece, so I had to make up an "guinea pig" piece to play with.

I had printed more fabric than I needed for the larger piece, so I put this little one together- it is 10" x 12.5" in size. I knew I was going to use clear thread for the sunprints- anything else usually takes the attention away from the prints. For the leaf prints, I thought of accenting the veining with thread, and tried it here. Most every Maple leaf is quilted differently. I found on both the black and silver prints, I liked the smoke colored invisible thread best. The black and silver threads made the images more stark, and that is not what I wanted for the larger piece. This did make an interesting little quilt by itself, it was available for purchase at my Art Quilt shop at Etsy, but is now SOLD. Check out the shop for other art quilts available. More B&W's are in the works.

While working on these, I also had ideas floating around for another black and white piece.

I still have the laces I wanted to try using, and also found a lot of white silk flowers. A design popped into my head, and if all goes well another piece will be done. This will be all flowers and lace. I began with the back side of a black printed fabric for the center oval. the background is two different black & white prints.

You can see a bunch of the flowers pinned to the wall beside the piece on the wall.

After a little more playing on the wall, I have gotten to where the final photo of this post is. I think I will use the gray fabric for leaves, and will have the white flowers arranged, spilling over the edges of the oval. The center oval will be edged in a heavy black lace I have been wanting to find a use for, and the outer border is a black with gray print.

There will possibly be more lace, and some beading somewhere, just not sure how far it will go. I will post more as I continue. I guess I've always been more of a "girly" girl, loving ruffles, lace and flowers. Hhopefull they will come together in this.

Two Pages Done- For Now….

Sunday, October 19th, 2008

I have finally got at least two pages updated at my website. I think I have finally gotten the typos, etc. out of my greatly expanded Art Quilt Jewelry page.  I thought I was done last night, but had someone find a couple of boo boos- Oops… They are fixed, and I now have 27 pins uploaded with PayPal buttons. My Postcards page is also updated, and I even have two postcards mounted to fabric covered canvases shown there, too. Now if I can get some buyers to the site.

These two little 5×7 mini quilts are now listed in my new Etsy Shop. I have 4 in this grouping that are all from photos I took in my gardens of the different varieties of Echinaceas I have had blooming.

One or more of these would make a great gift for a special garden lover.

My next big project will be to figure out the best way to get many of my large supply of mini quilts on the web. I have many more 5×7", 8×10" and 11×14". Without selling at shows, my great little babies have not found new homes.

I will be trying to put some of the pieces here, as well as on my website and shops.

This is one of the pins from my website Jewelry Page.

It is all the way at the bottom of the page.

Keep checking back to see what is new!

Back to Blogging

Friday, October 17th, 2008

After another few weeks away from blogging, I'm back again. I have been going through another bad stretch of fibro flares– not fun at all. I have only had a day or two at a time where I could get  anything done at all, even on the computer.

I have been trying to get more items listed at my Etsy shops. I have managed to get a few more art quilts at Andrus Gardens Art at Etsy.

These two 8"x10" mini quilts are a couple that I got uploaded. They are from my "Windows and Doors" series. "Rustic Windows 1" and "Rustic Windows 4". In this pair, I used fabrics that I printed using textile paint mixed with shaving cream for the "scenes" outside the windows. I mixed the paint with shaving cream, and placed a layer of it on a plastic covered table. I then placed pieces of white fabric on top and pressed them into the paint mixture. When the fabric is peeled off, the print is revealed. I added or moved colors around so that each print was different.

Another from this series is "Roses on the Window". This one is also 8"x10"in size.

These little quilts are some of the first ones I did in the smaller sizes. In my first ones, I wanted to depict flowers on a garden trellis. Many people thought they looked like windows, so I began making actual windows.

In addition to these, there are more new additions in my Art Shop, as well as a new set of Fall Place Mats at my Original Etsy Shop.

My short term goal is to get more of my many mini quilts on the web, either in one of my Etsy Shops or on my Website. Since I have not done many shows this year, I still have a lot of inventory on hand, and need to get it in front of anyone who may be interested in purchasing any of it. Taking all the photos of everything and getting them on the web, takes a lot of time.

I am slowly working a page at a time on my Website, and now have my Postcards page up and running again.

Hopefully, little by little, I will be ready for the holiday shopping season.
