Inspirations From a walk in the Gardens

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

Here is a glimpse of a walk I took through my gardens….

The walk began at the edge of my shade garden… Here is a clump of "pink" Daffodils… I didn't really pay much attention to these in past years, and thought they were regular yellow centered ones. They really aren't pink, but have pink tones in the cups- more of a peachy color, with yellow frills. Just goes to show that you can look at something and not really "see" it. These are really pretty in person, but not as pink as catalogs selling them show in their photos.

These little treasures were a real great surprise!! I discovered late last summer that Vinca minor had probably washed from the spot I planted them in to an old tumbled down stone wall. I remembered them, but was pleasantly surprised by the number of plants with flowers poking out of the rocks and woods debris. I got lots of great photos that may very well end up in a few "On  the Rocks" quilts this year. I am finding lots of little treasures growing among the many rocks around here.

Here is a plant that I had always considered a weed! This Lysmachia, or Creeping Jenny in chartreuse are taking over the garden on top of another rock wall. These shoots are creeping out from between the rocks- I am using these very hardy, vigorous plants as a ground cover to plant other flowers through. They are growing well in the very harsh, dry conditions of the wall garden. Sometimes there are places where "weeds" are welcome and do what is needed.

A bit more chartreuse foliage, this clump of "sweet Kate" Tradescantia make a bright spot of color in the front garden nearly hidden by Snow Glory foliage. The flowers on this plant will be a deep, rich purple- a great contrast to the foliage.

More plants growing amongst rocks…. Sempervivum, Hens and Chicks… these are reddish in color, and doing very well in the harsh conditions in my rock garden that doesn't have many survivors in it. This garden is very hostile due to it being very wet in late winter and early spring, then super dry in summer.

Linden tree buds just about to pop…. I love watching things progress in the spring, especially on sunny, blue sky days!

Wandering up to my upper garden, I found this clump of Muscari- Grape Hyacinths circling some double flowered daffs that are still in bud.

Here is another photo of one of my clumps of Rhubarb. This is a leaf with the sun showing through from the back. I think I will be harvesting stalks today!!

My final stop on this walk was the strawberry bed. We have started strawberry beds for years, but didn't have time in the spring to care for them so they never did well. This year I plan to have lots of strawberries to go with that rhubarb!!

As many of these photos show, there are many things that I have been around for years, but never "really seen". Taking a few extra moments to look closer and really see the beauty that is all around us. Watch for more photos as the days go by, and see where those photos may pop up in my art.

This is the finished 12"x12" piece shown in an earlier post. I finished the quilting in the flowers photos. You can see that I left the one flower quilted with smoke thread and the rest are done with clear. "Square Foot Flower Garden #1" is available at AndrusGardensArt at Etsy.

These two above quilts are also finally finished!! The clear thread adds to the details of the sunprints and heart-vine quilting is added to the stained glass like borders. "Stained Glass Ferns and Flowers #1" is just shy of 11"x18" in size and available at AndrusGardensArt at Etsy. "Stained Glass Maples #1" is 14"xalmost 15" in size, and available at my Artfire Studio.

I Ran Away from Home…

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Well, only for a few days, but it was great!!  I spent the end of last week and the weekend at my quilt guild's quilt retreat. It was so great to escape from life, and I actually found a bit more creativity creeping back!

This is where this quilt started the retreat. It is one I began at last year's retreat and never touched since. I did change my mind from then to now, and what was going to be bird appliques, became photos from my gardens instead. This photo shows photos on paper to trial my idea.

This is what it looks like now…. I originally was going to use a white cotton with silver sparkles between the blocks, but I didn't have enough. I decided that some of my fused crazy patch would work, so I pulled out all the white fabric chunks I had with me along with some pale painted pastel fabrics and fused them together for what I needed. I quilted the crazy patch areas with a soft pastel colored variegated thread.

This is the little "guinea pig" that I made up to use to trial quilting designs and thread choices. This one is nearly 8"x10" in size, with photos of pink Dogwood and blue Snow Glories.

Here is another over year old piece that got some attention. It is 12"x12" in sixe and had an assortment of different flower photos with black yarn couched over the edges and fuzed crazy patch between the photos. This piece is the one that "told" me that I needed clear thread to quilt in the flower photos. You can probably see the flower in the lower right where I tried a smoke colored invisible thread and I didn't like the way it looked, so I had to wait until I got home to do any more. I forgot to take my cleaar thread with me.

Here are a few more photos from my gardens that may find themselves in a quilt in the future. I took most of these photos after I got back home from my escape.

This yellow daff is growing all by itself, not too far from a crowd of white ones with the same flower form- probably a seedling that reverted back to the parents of the white ones.

My favorite spring flower is the blue Snow Glory- here is a photo of a pink one that I got in a mixture of pink and white ones. Some came out deeper, and there are also some white ones, too. This year, the white ones didn't have too many flowers, but next year I should have lotsmore of all the colors.

Pulsatilla is one of my favorite plants for sunprints. The leaves are very lacy and sunprint beautifully. The flowers bloom very early, before the foliage fully appears. Right now they are really fuzzy looking. The seed pods that will form later are also fuzzy puffs.

This is one of my Rhubarb plants. Last summer, I finally planted a few that had been in pots on the front lawn for years, as well as dividing the one that had been in this area for yearsand needed dividing. I now have 10 gorgeous clumps like this one- Rhubarb pies!! I should have lots for the freezer, too.

Now I'm off to finishing those quilts shown at the beginning of this post…. It feels good to finally get back to my machine!

Stained Glass in Fabric

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Finally, day three back at my sewing machine!! The bowls got more ideas flowing than I have had in a long  time. Night before last, I went to bed and thought about trying some more with creating the look of stained glass again like I did with my "Stained Glass and Ferns" quilt, but on a smaller scale. This link shows the earlier piece in progress, and here is the finished quilt that did a bit of traveling to various shows and won a couple ribbons.

Here are the two works in progress that I have so far-

This began with a simple Maple leaf sunprint that I surrounded with some fused crazy patch in neutral tones, then added a stained glass border. I will be binding this with black yarn as I did my first one. I still have to quilt this also.

This second piece has a sunprint of ferns and flowers with same border ideas as the Maple piece above. I also have to do the quilting and may even do some beading….. still thinking about that. I have used so much black thread with all the satin stitching used for the piecing.

Also today I have a photo of a plant that bloomed before I got to see it. There is a seed pod forming, so I hopefully will have baby seedlings popping up for more in the coming years.

The Winter Aconite (too lazy right now to look up the botanical name… wow, my brain isn't what it used to be- I used to know all of my plants' both names) is just about the first flower to bloom here in PA with pretty yellow daisies. The foliage is very pretty and in coming years, I will have to press some for sunprinting. I only had a tiny piece of root for this and was really surprised it survived the poor care it got last summer stuck in a pot with something else. Next year I will have to look at my gardens sooner!

Bowls are Calling!

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Finally I seem to be finding myself being pulled into the studio! Fabric bowls have been calling out to be made, and I am beginning to see a bit of productivity here. It doesn't hurt that I will be giving my "Off The Deep End" lecture at a guild this week. In that lecture, I show and talk about how fabric bowls changed the way I look at fabric and scraps, and I show the progression from bowls to my pins to a ribbon winning quilt.

This is an old photo, but there are similar ones in the works now. It will take a bit longer to finish a bunch of these as I am working on writing up the pattern and instructions for them as I make them. Taking photos of the steps and drawing the actual patterns are a bit time consuming.

Here are some of the squares of fabric fused to batting ready for final cutting.

And for your enjoyment- my first blooms of Spring!! Finally some color with the dead grass and mud.

My favorite spring flowers- Snow Glories- Chionodoxa, I have some new ones in white and pink that are still in tight bud, photos to come…

My lonely Crocus flowers… there used to be bunches of them, but they have died out in past years. The purple one was hidden among the dead stalks of my tall Phlox. I almost didn't see it hiding there.

My home is now again quiet, now that all who were here visiting have gone. Time to get back to playing with fabric. Maybe I'll get better at shorter and more often posts here… that is my plan.

Looking Back….

Wednesday, April 1st, 2009

In my last post I was attempting to find a way to overcome a creative block that has been bothering me for too long. A lot has happened in the past couple weeks that has really made me think about life in general, and start looking through old family photos.

Very early on Sunday morning March 15, 2009 my stepson, Tad Bagley who lived in Port St Lucie FL was killed in a car accident on his 44th birthday. The call I received was a total shock… notifying his brothers was even harder, especially with one in Iraq. Thankfully his wife Bonnie, who was injured in the crash, had non life threatening injuries and was released from the hospital after several days… very sore, but alive. My husband, Ken was to spend a week with Tad and Bonnie in FL while I was at a fiber artists retreat. Instead we were attending his funeral here in PA…. Tad loved the mountains up here.

A tragedy like this makes you think a lot…. Here are some photos and thoughts about the first "kid" to ever call me Mom. Tad was 18 when I married his dad, and called me Mom during a dance together at the reception. It felt odd having someone only 4 yrs younger than me calling me mom, but was great to feel accepted.

Here is a photo of us on Tad & Bonnie's wedding day, 19 years ago. They were married on our 5th anniversary. Marla, Ken's daughter is on the far left, with Ken and I on the right.

I love this photo of Tad with 2 of his little brothers. Marrying someone nearly 18 yrs older than myself, we had an interesting family. My guys still have a little trouble figuring it all out.

Here Zack is a pretty new baby, with Aaron not quite 2.

Tad sharing his shades with Aaron on his little bike. In later years, Tad would impress his little brothers with his motorcycles.

This photo doesn't have Tad in it, but would not have been possible without him. He worked first as a stunt man for Disney World, then after injuring his knee worked with sets and lighting. He saved up his passes and made it possible for his  little brothers to visit. The first thing we did was to visit the Indiana Jones stunt show he worked on and the boys got to go behind the scenes after to meet the stuntmen they watched.

We did more than just visit Disney on that trip to FL. Here Ken, Aaron and Zack are fishing in a canal Tad took us to. It was a  fun afternoon for my guys with their big brother.

Here is one of the "big" catches of the day.

Somehow, Nick always seemed to catch the bigger fish. He still loves to fish anywhere he can. During that trip, Tad also took us on a canoe trip on a river where we saw an alligator, and Nick was scared the canoe would tip over.

Here is a family photo taken 6 years ago, at our son Aaron's wedding reception. From left to right- Zack, Nick, Marla, Aaron, Tad.

This is the whole gang… almost. Missing was our granddaughter, Ally and Tad's wife Bonnie. Aaron's wife is by him, The tall guy beside Tad in the back is our grandson, Derek. He is 9 months older than our Nick. Marla is with her then husband, Eric, and their two little girls, Eva and Maia are in front.

Here are the 3 granddaughters together a year ago. From L-R- Maia, Ally, Eva. The two little ones really have grown up!

This is a photo I never expected to be able to take for a long time…. my 3 guys together for the funeral in their uniforms. The military was so great, helping to get Nick and especially Zack home.

Here is our little family group with baby Jenna added. After looking through old photos, I realize many that I wish I had taken in the past. It makes me think more about getting photos of family every chance I can. I also need to begin organizing those photos better so I can find them. I have only looked through about half of what is packed into a couple file drawers.

The past weeks have made my creative block seem a pretty small thing in life. I need to continue to be thankful for all I have- My husband and my family, especially. Eventually, I will be able to create again….. The mountains here in PA that Tad always loved, seem to be calling…..

Be sure to enjoy the time you have with your loved ones!
