Anemonella

Monday, May 18th, 2009

With a little help from Kathy W. in my post with the “Water Road Flower”, I now know it’s proper name.  In Kathy’s comment she thought it to be a Wood Anemone, but when looking at all the photos of that flower, the leaves were not the same as this plant has. On to Google to do more searching….. My first thought was that it might be a Hepatica, but again, similar flowers, but the leaves are not the same. A lot of other plants have very similar flowers! I finally found a few photos with the same leaves these plants have…. It is Anemonella thalictroides, or Rue Anemone. The foliage did remind me of the Thalictrum I have growing in my front garden, but they grow very tall. The leaves are what gave this little guy it’s name because of the resemblance. Here is a little more about this little beauty. The flowers are supposed to also be in shades of pink to lavender…. I think I will have to take a walk down Water Road to see if they are still blooming (supposed to be a long bloomer) and see if there are any other colors there.

This is a native plant that likes to grow in light shade, and will tolerate more dry conditions than Anemones that have similar flowers. I love discovering new things in the wild. That is one great thing about living where I do…. there are still areas that have all types of treasures to be found right along the roadsides.

New Items!

Here is one of my latest additions to the AndrusGardensQuilts shop. This is one of the pins I beaded this past week. The quilt base is made from black and white fabrics, and beaded in various shades of pink and burgundy, with a silver butterfly. Black Pink Butterfly Pin. I experimented with different ways to take the photos of the pins, using some pansy and viola flowers to help give scale to the photos.

Here is one in the diamond shape, beaded in many spring colors. The backs on each of the pins allow them to be worn as a pin or as a pendant. The diamonds look especially nice worn as pendants. Diamond Black Blue Pink Butterfly Pin.

Rectangle Pink Blue with Hummingbird Pin. Another rectangular shaped pin with a hummingbird, pink, blue and teal beads.

Here is a group shot of the 3 above pins with a fourth one. The white silk crumpled up seems to work fairly well as a background for photos.

In addition to the pins, I finished the beading on two more rocky ACEO’s. Spring Blues #2 is available at AndrusGardensArt at Etsy. I hand stitched blue colored gemstone chips, beads and silver critters to the rocky section and added beads to the flower centers and more beads add accents to the bright blue silk section.

The final photo for this post…. Another rocky ACEO with the blue silk. Spring Blues #3 has two rocky areas with a part of a photo with green leaves, small white and pink flowers. This also has blue gemstone chips, and various colored beads accenting the rocky areas, flowers, and quilting in the blue silk section.

More Garden Treasures

Friday, May 8th, 2009

The rain finally stopped for a little while, and I wandered into the gardens with my camera again.

Actually, this first photo was taken a couple days ago while driving home. I spotted these little flowers blooming along the road. I will have to do a bit of research to find out what they are. I keep finding little treasures along this stretch of road. It used to be only one lane, but was widened to pass two vehicles. There are new things popping up where the roadside was cleared during the widening. Good thing there is not much traffic so I can take time to stop and take photos.

I have always loved variegated leaved plants, and finally now have a couple of these variegated Phlox subulata. The Nettleson's variety has wonderful leaves with white and pink tinged edges along with the pink flowers.

These buds are from one of the Peony varieties I splurged on last fall. This one is supposed to be a not too double deep coral color. There are ants on these buds already!

It looks like there will be no flowers on these variegated Convallaria, or Lily of the Valley plants. They were planted last summer, and I am happy to see that they survived the  winter in their new home.

These are in another garden…. I have had the pink variety for many years, and they have spread out nicely in their part of the garden. The fuzzy white area in the lower corner of this photo is the tail of Cuddles the cat who was following me around.

Here is another flower that I was really happy to see return. I have planted this type of low growing Phlox in past years, but the deer ate them down each time I planted them. I tried a different garden and now have 3 fast growing clumps! The dandelions are everywhere, too.

Here is what I am battling in many gardens…. lots of weeds! Can you find the Hosta trying to show itself?? Thankfully Hosta are pretty sturdy, and battle with the weeds pretty well. This Hosta is "Krossa Regal" and will get to be really huge by summer.

This is how I wish all of my gardens looked. This Hosta with a clump of Lamium next to it only have a few weeds to compete against right now. I am trying to get low growing plants to take over the spaces under the Hostas and other taller plants to keep the weeds down.

After much time spent weeding, here is what one area of the back yard garden looks like right now. The Hostas in the previous photos are along the wall to the left of this photo. This garden is shaded by Black Walnut trees, and I have finally found a nice selection of plants that grow well with them. I keep dividing my Hostas and moving them around to fill in bare spots.

Down in my garden in the woods, I found this little gem a few days ago. I didn't have my camera with me and didn't get this photo until after we had heavy rains, so the leaves are a bit dirty, but I am so glad this little new addition seems to be happy with it's new home. I planted a lot of new perennials last summer, many who had been living in pots for quite a few years like this one. It should be much happier in the ground!

Up to the Lilac garden where they are all coming into bloom! We have many different varieties and colors of Lilacs collected over the years.

The strawberies are blooming!!! I can't wait for berries this year… I just need to get mulch on these or they will be buried in weeds like everything else.

Here is the cat that got his tail in the earlier photo. He was checking out the surroundings from the trellis over one of the raised garden boxes that have been neglected for many years. I hope to put these back into use this year.

The rain didn't take all the flowers off the almond tree… I got some really neat shots of some of the remaining flowers. I didn't know we had an almond tree until Ken told me what it was….. A nice surprise! Pink flowers instead of the white on the apples, pears and plums. We won't have almonds, though until we get another variety of almond or a peach tree to cross polinate with it, but the flowers are pretty in the spring.

This brings the garden tour to an end for this photo session. I am getting lots of flowers to play with in new quilts to come…. Lots of ideas are forming….

I’ve Been Beading!

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

Finally I have a couple more finished little art quilts to show! The cold is now just hanging on in it's final stages, and I spent some couch time with my beads.

This little piece was probably thinking that it was never going to be a finished work (if a quilt can have thoughts). I began this before Christmas last year and began the beading just after the first of the new year. Finally now in May "Violet on the Rocks #1" is complete, and 4.5"x6.5" in size. I seem to be adding more and more beads on each rocky piece I do. The center of the Violet flower seemed to call for a few beads, so I added some little soft yellow and green beads to it.

Here is a close-up shot, showing the beads in the flower center better.

Here is the other finished piece…. "Spring Flowers" was started at my quilt guild retreat as a "guinea pig" for a larger piece I worked on, and shown in earlier posts. It is just shy of 8"x10" in size. I decided to add a few butterflies along the edges with a few more beads for their trails.

The Dogwoods are blooming already this year… much earlier than normal, so I hope to find a few days to try to get more photos of their beautiful blooms. The Snow glories have already faded, but I can enjoy them any time through my photos.

I also finally did some more beading for pins. These are both ready for their backs. Playing with my beads again has been a great way to feel like I am accomplishing something even though I have no energy for much  more than plopping on the couch. The quilts can be found for sale at my Etsy Art Shop, and the pins will soon be listed in my other Etsy Shop.

No new photos from the gardens…. It's been a bit gloomy and wet to be doing much outdoors.

More Garden Treasures

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

A few more tiny treasures popped up in my gardens this week. I was kept away from the gardens most of the week by a nasty cold my son shared with me, but I did get a few photos while trying to pull some of the fast growing weeds during a couple short trips outdoors.

This was my most favorite find…. I thought this little lavender colored Anemone had died this past winter, but this little flower greeted me, almost hidden by the leaves of the Winter Aconite plant. It just decided to show itself a bit late, and only has one flower this year, but should be back with more flowers next year. I love the delicate leaves on the fragile stems of this 6" tall plant.

This Brunnera is growing near the little Anemone. The variegated leaves are beautiful in the shade during the summer. The tiny blue flowers are a great sky blue color, but really hard to photograph well. They make a dainty cloud above the clump of foliage.

More tiny treasures in the gardens. These are wild violets in one of my rock gardens. They may find themselves in one of my "On the Rocks" series of art quilts. The feathery foliage in the background is from Queen Ann's Lace plants that are probably not going to be allowed to stay there. They will be great to use for sunprints, so I will probably press them to use later.

Here is Roxy enjoying the sunshine while I was discovering my little garden treasures.

My cold kept me indoors a lot, so I used some of that time to do some beading and embroidery on this little quilt. The first photo of it are here in this earlier post. After a few more beads, this will be ready to list at Etsy. These flowers were calling out for beads and French knots to dress them up. At least since I didn't feel well enough to work in my gardens outdoors, I could still do a little bit of "gardening" indoors.

Again I have found that there are many little treasures just waiting to be found if I just take a bit of time to really look for them. I just hope I can keep the weeds from covering them all up.
