Dye work is all about PATIENCE and batching…leaving the dye penetrated fabric alone for a period of time and using that time for some other playful pass time is always my best solution to the faded glory you experienced. Also, I do not add the soda ash solution until about two or three hours before I am ready to rinse. Soda Ash is the setting agent of choice for MX Dyes, but does NOT have to be put into the dye solutions before the cloth is coloured. This is only advise through experimentation…I sometimes wait 24 to 48 hours (or beyond) to rinse fabrics dyed and soaked in soda ash solution. The results are better for me every time I exercise the patient WAIT! I also add a couple of heaping teaspoons of urea to my dye mixing water – seems to help ensure the brilliant colour I want.
Don’t give up… practice makes perfect and your fabrics are perfect candidates for over dyes which can get better and better every time you hit them with more colour! Bethany in Kingston, Canada
