Puzzle Play

The past couple days I have returned to "playing" with  what I have called my puzzle.

It is the WIP that is pictured at the end of the sunprinting tutorial, with an empty corner.  I needed to print the right color fabrics for it.  This picture shows a trial layout of the upper left corner, the lower right and middle are mostly stitched. In this picture, I found I did not like a couple of the pieces where they were, so things will be moving. It has been interesting putting this together. Like doing a puzzle and making up the pieces as I go- I started with the border.  Pictures below show what I've been doing today.

Here I removed much of the stitched part, so I had some cutting mat to work on, and start cutting and puzzling. The Sunprints are cut up and sections of fused crazy patch are used in between. I'm finally using up some of those scraps that have been building up, but more seem to be accumulating!

Caution:  This method of construction is probably not Quilt Police Approved! The fabric is fused to both sides of batting, then the pieces are cut to size, then satin-stitched together.
Once the seams are done, the "ditch" quilting is also done.

Stitched pieces ready for trimming.
I trim the pieces to the size I want, then add them where I want them.
If you see dark spots at the ends of the seams, that is "Fray Check" that I put on the stitching to keep things in place during, and after triming. I have to let it dry, or iron it dry before cutting, or stitching. These pieces are on the pressing cloth I use to keep the iron and board from getting any gunkier than they already are.

I'll post more pics as I progress.  It is at the point that I will probably find it hard to stop for sleep.

About

I am a former textile artist and new pattern designer with a degree in horticulture, wishing to share my love of nature, flowers and gardens with everyone through my photos, sunprinted fabrics, and now pattern designs. Chronic Lyme Disease has caused major changes to the direction my life. I have to limit the amount of time spent digging in my gardens, and quilting has become more difficult. I discovered pattern design as a way to get art back into my life. I now use my gardens and photos to inspire designs that can be used on fabrics and print on demand items.
